Microsoft Clarity Just Quietly Killed a Bunch of LLM Observability Tools

On May 13, 2026, Clarity rolled out citation tracking inside its free dashboard. That means the exact functionality a handful of paid AI visibility tools have been charging for now lives inside a free Microsoft product. If you currently pay for an observability tool, this changes your math immediately.

What Clarity Just Added


Clarity now tracks the data points marketers actually care about when it comes to AI search. You get citations — the total number of times your pages get cited across all grounding queries. You get share of authority, which divides your citations by total citations across the full query set. You get the grounding queries themselves, meaning the actual key phrases AI systems use to retrieve your content. You see exactly which pages get cited. And you see AI referral traffic as a percentage of your total sessions.


All of it sits in one dashboard. For free. Inside a tool you probably should already run.

Why This Matters


If you don't already use Clarity for session recordings and heat maps, install it today. The recording and heat map feature set already beats most paid tools, and now you also get an AI visibility layer baked in.


If you already pay for a dedicated LLM observability platform, take a hard look at your subscription. Clarity now covers the core dashboard most of those tools build their pricing around — and Microsoft gives it away.

We've Seen This Movie Before


This whole move reminds me of what Clarity did to Hotjar back in 2022 and 2023. Hotjar owned the heat mapping and session recording space. They had a free tier, but they capped sessions hard and pushed users toward paid plans for unlimited tracking.


Then Clarity launched. Free. No caps. Unlimited everything from day one. Hotjar took a massive hit almost overnight and never fully recovered its position.


The same dynamic is about to play out in the LLM observability space.

Which Tools Sit in Trouble


The companies most exposed are the ones whose entire pitch is "we show you where you get cited in AI search."


Smaller players like Scrunch will feel this fastest. Bigger names like Profound — which leads the space and has grown a lot — will feel it too. Even tools like Athena have to rethink where their moat actually lives.


The smart pivot pushes up-market into enterprise features Clarity won't replicate. The tools that don't make that pivot probably won't survive this update.

It Gets Worse for Competitors


Clarity isn't stopping with citation tracking. In the same announcement, the team said they'll keep expanding citations with additional insights.


Next up: topic insights. Clarity will automatically group cited queries into intent-driven themes so you can see not just what content AI surfaces, but why and in what context AI systems pick it. That's the exact kind of premium feature most paid observability tools use to justify their pricing.

What to Do Right Now


Three moves. First, install Clarity on your site today — most marketers haven't even heard about this update, so you have a real window to get ahead. Second, audit your current observability subscriptions. If you pay for citation tracking and AI visibility dashboards, you can probably cut that line item entirely. Third, watch what Clarity ships next. The roadmap suggests the gap between Clarity and the paid tools will only widen.
